Triangle Puzzle

I first saw this puzzle posted on Joel Robbin's office door at the University of Wisconsin. The first image shows four brightly colored pieces arranged on a 13 x 5 grid.

The second image shows the same four pieces, again arranged on a 13 x 5 grid, but this time with a hole. How is this possible?
